Sisal is a year-round dive destination — but the experience varies considerably month to month. Water temperature, visibility, sea conditions and marine life activity all follow seasonal patterns driven by Gulf of Mexico oceanography, the Yucatán Peninsula's climate and the biological calendars of the species that inhabit the reef. Planning your visit around these patterns makes a good dive trip into an exceptional one.
This guide gives you a month-by-month breakdown of conditions in Sisal, written from the direct operational experience of Sisal Dive Center — the dive team that knows these waters better than anyone. Use it to plan your trip dates and to know what to pack, what to expect and what to look for underwater.
Sisal Diving Season Overview
Sisal's diving year divides broadly into three seasons:
- Peak Season (November – April): Best overall conditions. Calmer seas, higher visibility, comfortable temperatures, winter pelagic visitors. The ideal time for most divers.
- Warm Season (May – August): Warmest water, active turtle nesting, higher humidity and heat on land, some afternoon storm risk. Excellent for wildlife encounters.
- Transition Season (September – October): Hurricane season peak, variable conditions, but also strong marine life activity and lower visitor numbers. Best value for flexible travelers.

Detailed Season Profiles
January – March: The Diver's Sweet Spot
This is the period that experienced divers at Sisal most often recommend. The Gulf of Mexico is at its calmest, with high-pressure systems producing flat seas and excellent surface conditions for the boat ride to dive sites. Water temperature dips to 22–24°C — cool enough that a 3mm wetsuit is welcome, warm enough for comfortable extended bottom times. Visibility peaks at 15–20 meters, revealing the reef architecture in its full extent.
Marine life during this period includes all year-round species plus winter pelagic visitors — large barracuda, jack schools and occasional hammerhead sharks in deeper water. The Norte winds (cold northerly fronts) are the main weather risk, potentially grounding boats for 1–3 days at a time. Sisal Dive Center monitors conditions daily and provides advance notice of Norte events so itineraries can be adjusted.
April – June: Transition to Warm Season
Water temperatures climb through this period, reaching 29–30°C by June. Sea turtle activity intensifies — green turtles are constant in the seagrass meadows, and loggerheads begin arriving for nesting as May progresses. Visibility remains good through April and begins to vary more in May and June as storm season approaches and river runoff after rains affects coastal water clarity.
This is an excellent period for the PADI Night Diver course — long daylight hours allow comfortable afternoon dives, and the active warm-season reef makes night diving particularly rewarding after dark.
July – September: Warm Season Peak
Summer diving in Sisal offers the warmest water (no wetsuit needed — or a thin 1mm if preferred), the highest turtle density, coral spawning events and a lush, fully active reef ecosystem. The trade-off is lower average visibility (8–12 meters) and genuine storm risk during July through September. Hurricane activity in the Gulf rarely directly strikes the Sisal coast, but tropical systems can cause several consecutive days of elevated seas and suspended diving operations.
Flexible travelers who monitor forecasts and can adjust their schedule will find summer diving in Sisal genuinely rewarding. Fixed-schedule travelers who cannot afford weather days are better served by the peak winter season.
October – December: Return to Excellence
October marks the return of reliable conditions, with visibility improving back toward 15+ meters as storm season winds down and the waters clear. November and December bring conditions that approach the best of the peak January–March window while offering the bonus of holiday-season quiet on the tourist trail. Sea turtle nesting activity ends, but all reef species remain active, and the arrival of winter visitors — including large pelagic fish — begins in December.
Wetsuit Recommendations by Season
- January – March: 3mm full wetsuit recommended; 5mm for divers who feel cold
- April – June: 3mm suit or shorty; depending on individual sensitivity
- July – September: Rash guard or 1mm suit; water is very warm
- October – December: 3mm suit comfortable for most temperatures
